Grandmaster Deems J. Smith is a highly respected martial artist, educator, and community leader whose life’s mission has been dedicated to personal empowerment through discipline, awareness, and self-defense.

He began his martial arts journey at a young age and earned his Black Belt in 1976 from the late Butch Saleem Brown, and became a Master in 1984, and achieved the prestigious rank of Grandmaster in 1997. Throughout his competitive career, he participated in numerous martial arts tournaments, earning multiple first-place titles in fighting and establishing a reputation for skill, strategy, and discipline.

A proud product of the Ninja Karate Federation and Ninja University of Martial Arts, Grandmaster Smith credits his foundation and philosophy to the teachings and influence of his earliest mentors. His first teachers were his father, the late Henry “Hank” Smith, DD, and the late Butch Saleem Brown whom was the founder of the Freestyle Lords karate group in 1972. Butch Saleem Brown a black belt under the late Grandmaster Fredderick Baron Tayler Godfrey.

He honors the late Grandmaster Fredderick Baron Tayler Godfrey, founder of the Ninja Karate Federation, and gives great respect and acknowledgment to Grandmaster Eugene David Floyd, founder of the Ninja University of Martial Arts. Their teachings and guidance helped shape his lifelong commitment to discipline, mental awareness, and natural ability in martial arts.

Building upon these roots, Grandmaster Smith developed his own unique system known as M.A.N.A Science Martial Arts™ — Mental Awareness Natural Ability. His program blends traditional martial arts principles with modern applications in safety awareness, bully management, and personal development. Designed for all ages, M.A.N.A Science Martial Arts™ uniquely emphasizes parent-and-student training together, strengthening families through shared learning and mutual respect.

What makes this system unique… His system M.A.N.A Science Martial Arts™ focuses on taking the strength ability away from an attacker not by redirecting the attacker’s energy. The system focuses on un-aligning the muscular and skeletal system thusly making a strong attacker appear to not be able to apply their strength while not applying strength to the attacker and only using your natural movement ability.

In addition to his martial arts achievements, Grandmaster Smith is a retired Newark Police Officer, where he served with distinction and dedication. During his tenure, he was assigned full-time to the Newark Police Academy, where he served as a curriculum instructor and was in charge of police self-defense training. His expertise extended beyond the mat to the courtroom, where he also taught courtroom testimony to recruits and active officers — ensuring that his lessons in discipline and professionalism translated to every aspect of law enforcement.

Grandmaster Smith continues to inspire new generations through his M.A.N.A Science Martial Arts™ program, which he teaches personally as the sole instructor. He also conducts senior safety and self-defense workshops, helping older adults build confidence and awareness in everyday situations.
Respected as both a teacher and protector, Grandmaster Deems J. Smith represents the true spirit of martial arts — balancing mental focus, physical mastery, and community service.

M.A.N.A. Science Martial Arts — Mental Awareness Natural Ability — is a real-time, non-choreographed martial arts system created by Grandmaster Deems J. Smith. It is built to condition the mind and body to work as one unit of awareness, precision, and control.
Unlike traditional martial arts that rely on memorized movements or tournament routines, M.A.N.A. Science develops spontaneous natural response — the ability to react instantly and effectively to a real threat, without pre-planned steps.

M.A.N.A. Science Martial Arts is both mental conditioning and physical defense training. It was also taught to police recruits at the Newark Police Academy, where Grandmaster Deems J. Smith served as a full-time self-defense and curriculum instructor. There, the system trained officers to remain calm under pressure and respond with legal and proportional force.
